MOVED BY A CRESCENT

the usually hilarious dowd takes a somber tone in her new column about colin powell's recent meet the press appearance

Elsheba Khan at the grave of her son, Specialist Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan.  photograph by Platon.
general colin powell, the former secretary of state for the bush administration, endorsed obama on the show and recounted a poignant moment of truth that inspired his difficult decision.

dowd writes, powell "saw a photograph of  a mother pressing her head against the gravestone of her son, a 20-year-old soldier who had been killed in iraq.  on the headstone were engraved his name, kareem rashad sultan khan, his awards - the purple heart, the bronze star - and a crescent and a star to denote his islamic faith."
